Regional-scale machine learning weather prediction

Olle Räty
Finnish Meteorological Institute

The aim of this work is to develop and implement regional-scale machine learning weather prediction models for both operational and research application purposes.

This research has direct social impacts, as it aims to provide accurate, high-resolution machine learning weather predictions alongside traditional numerical weather forecasts.

The work is based on the Anemoi framework, developed as a Europe-wide collaboration. Anemoi has been tailored for training complex neural network machine learning weather prediction models. Training of the models is performed using large observational and numerical weather prediction datasets available at both global and regional scales.

Progress

Great start for the Programme! The first 36 postdoctoral researchers have been recruited and started their work. Half of them relocated to Finland from abroad.
