Monitoring forest disturbances and crop traits via advanced drone remote sensing

Raquel Oliveira
Finnish Geospatial Research Institute - National Land Survey of Finland

Climate change is intensifying ecological shifts across forest and agricultural landscapes, including increased insect outbreaks in forests, such as bark beetle infestations, and altered growth dynamics in crops.

These changes threaten ecosystem services and productivity, but their impacts can be mitigated through timely and accurate assessments of forest health and crop biomass and quality traits. This project aims to establish an advanced drone vegetation monitoring framework through comprehensive, and high spectral and spatial resolution data processing and analysis. This will be accomplished by leveraging cutting-edge hyperspectral drone technology and integrating multiple remote sensing (RS) data from various sites complemented with other relevant RS data sources related to vegetation growth and conditions, contributing to a comprehensive and accurate monitoring system.

Progress

Great start for the Programme! The first 36 postdoctoral researchers have been recruited and started their work. Half of them relocated to Finland from abroad.
