My research examines innovation—the production of ””useful ideas””—a key driver of long-run economic growth.
My work speaks to fundamental questions about growth and innovation, while also informing the design of specific institutions.
In ongoing work, I investigate how patents may dampen the future creativity of corporate inventors, and how job loss affects workers’ propensity to invent. In an early-stage project, we plan to study how R&D grants shape the careers of inventive labour, their reallocation across firms, and the likelihood of becoming an inventor. I also study how consensus standards (such as the internet and Bluetooth) are created, and how the patent system creates tensions in this process.
Empirically, I draw on Finnish registry data linked to patents, alongside publicly available datasets on patents and technology standards.
