Dynamic Agent-based Modeling for Circular Economy Assessments (DYNAMO)

Janne Korhonen
Finnish Environment Institute (Syke)

Building a sustainable society requires research to have a policy impact.

Currently, there is unmet demand for more quantitative assessments of the effects of both policies and environmental changes. Such assessments require modelling approaches suited for examining the complex challenges inherent in transformational change.

DYNAMO project seeks to fill this gap by building upon and complementing Syke’s existing modelling capabilities and knowledge base with modern complex system modelling methods, particularly by Agent-Based Models (ABMs) assisted by Large Language Models (LLMs) or ””generative AI.””

The specific goal is to build models capable of exploring the dynamics of circular economy market evolution and doing related policy assessments. Judicious, limited use of LLMs helps make models and assessment tools more accessible while keeping the results grounded in empirical research.

Progress

Great start for the Programme! The first 36 postdoctoral researchers have been recruited and started their work. Half of them relocated to Finland from abroad.
