AI methods in global high resolution climate modelling

Eemeli Holopainen
Finnish Meteorological Institute

This research will advance global high-resolution climate modeling within a European consortium developing digital twins of the Earth system.

The focus is on creating innovative aerosol representations using AI/ML methods to capture their climate effects with unprecedented accuracy. The role emphasizes AI/ML and GPU computing to design efficient model components for state-of-the-art HPC environments. The research aims to deliver valuable solutions for both the public sector (e.g. decision support) and private industry (e.g. energy, air quality). By developing more accurate and computationally efficient AI methods, we can produce climate simulations that are both scientifically rigorous and practically applicable. This work will strengthen climate research while ensuring its results can be directly applied in real-world contexts. In this work, we will use OpenIFS and IFS atmospheric models with HAMM7 and HAM-Lite aerosol models.

Progress

Great start for the Programme! The first 36 postdoctoral researchers have been recruited and started their work. Half of them relocated to Finland from abroad.
