Last year, twelve government research institutes received additional funding to strengthen expertise and R&D activities.
With a total investment of €40 million, the institutes will recruit 85 fixed-term postdoctoral researchers for 2025–2028. The first 36 postdoctoral researchers have now been selected, and half of them will relocate to Finland from abroad.
The new postdoctoral researchers will conduct their work in close collaboration with companies. The postdoctoral phase represents an advanced stage in a researcher’s career following completion of a doctoral degree. The expertise of highly qualified experts strengthens companies’ development activities, which is a key driver of business success. The international recruitment process aims to attract top talent to Finland. The goal is that, after their postdoctoral period, these experts will move flexibly into R&D roles across different sectors of society.
The programme addresses major societal challenges through science while investing in growth sectors. High-quality research focuses on areas such as satellite technology, artificial intelligence, materials science, quantum technology, sustainable consumption and production, and solutions for climate change adaptation.
The postdoctoral programme also supports the Government Programme objective of increasing Finland’s research and development (R&D) expenditure to four per cent of GDP by 2030.
